Police presence too strong for traditional party week

Welcome Weak?

First they killed student gatherings in the streets. Then they all but obliterated tailgating at football games. Now it seems Welcome Week is the next student-led institution that MSU and the city of East Lansing have marked for destruction. Cops are cracking down hard on students in East Lansing this year, and it seems they won’t rest until all partying in the city is effectively squashed.

Certainly some sort of police presence is to be expected, with students moving in and even more non-students arriving to the city in droves. However, this year police presence seems to be taking on a much more ominous tone, with heightened awareness. As though patrol cars and bike squadrons on every block weren’t enough, now East Lansing’s finest have taken to horseback, clogging the already congested sidewalks and leaving mountains of steaming horse “byproduct” on unsuspecting residents’ lawns. I can only imagine how much fun students will have cleaning that up in the morning.
