Take a peek behind the curtain and test drive the NEW StateNews.com today!

Ben Harper

What’s good, everybody? This is Trey Scroggin, music and movies reporter at The State News. I’m starting my fifth semester here as a social relations junior (whatever the hell that is?) here at State.

I should just let you know first off that music is my life – I’ve played drums and hand percussion for nearly 13 years, having taken lessons in funk, jazz and rock – three styles that lay the basis for nearly all of modern music.

When I’m not enjoying how gloriously amazing I am, I listen to music. This summer, two of my favorite bands, Rebelution and Slightly Stoopid, released new albums (ironically, the music that captivates me most is straight out of the West Coast, and unfortunately I’m stuck here). It was a great summer for music, and it’s going to get even better on Tuesday when Ben Harper releases his next album, “Lifeline.”

The video single for “In The Colors,” from the new album, is available on his Web site and effectively showcases his talents and sound – Harper’s blues-infected voice, the funky back beats on the drums and pianos, the hammering bass takes fuel from the subtle percussion and the guitars melt in and out of the limelight.

After a whirlwind seven-day recording session, Ben Harper and his band, the Innocent Criminals, came up with “Lifeline,” the best possible finale to a summer of great new music.
