SN Style: Interview with creativity

April 17, 2007
Nursing senior Amy Horal models an alternative job-interview ensemble.

The traditional image of the business interview is simple and polite, nothing flashy, distracting or, frankly, interesting. But what is appropriate for the noncorporate jobs that require their employees to show creativity beyond the boardroom?

The basic rules still apply. Keep it simple when it comes to hair, makeup and nails. Look clean and presentable, but leave the tight updo for that backup interview tomorrow.

The outfit leaves room for more expression in terms of color, pattern and style, but don't be too casual. A simple shift dress in a rich color like the gardener's jumper by Viola, available at Anthropologie for $128, shows style but is not tight or revealing. Forever 21 also sells a variety of dresses, such as the woven eyelet dress for $27.80. Pairing it with tights and boots instead of heels makes the look less restrictive, but still neat and professional.

A great coat is a wardrobe staple, perfect for layering and appearing in a variety of colors and fabrics this season. This MICHAEL by Michael Kors raincoat sells for $140 at Nordstrom, but it's is a steal at $70 at discount retailer Nordstrom Rack. Mossimo for Target features a long, twill trench in several colors for $39.99.

Accessories allow the personality to really show, but limit it to one bold piece. A chrysalis necklace sells for $58 at Anthropologie, while a neon, wooden necklace can be found at Wet Seal for $7.

Throw out the traditional briefcase for a larger handbag. The oversized, faux leather bag seen here is available in a variety of colors at Forever 21 for $29.80. The Kate Spade Sam classic nylon tote retails for $190 in basic black.

The definition of professional has changed, but sophistication never goes out of style.
