Monday musings

Zach Johnson finished a stroke over par, but that was good enough to win last week's Masters and take home a $1.3 million purse. The 6 billion people who didn't enter the tournament have filed a class-action suit for Johnson's winnings, claiming they each finished better in relation to par than he did.

A 5-yard penalty will be assessed next season for spiking or throwing the ball after a nonscoring play has ended, the NFL announced last week.

Upon hearing news of the ban, Detroit Lions wide receiver Roy Williams abruptly announced his retirement.

The 102-year-old Elsie McLean became the oldest golfer to record a hole-in-one after acing a 100-yard par 3 with a driver.

McLean was so excited by the accomplishment that she forgot to turn off her cart's left turn signal for the rest of the round.

The NCAA voted last week to revert to its 2005 football timing rules, stopping the clock on all possession changes and not starting it on kickoffs until the ball is received.

Michigan officials said they were pleased by the ruling, as it will allow John Beilein more time to operate his hot dog stand in section 42 to pay off his $2.5 million buyout to West Virginia.

NBA.com released a list of players' Chinese nicknames last week, including the Detroit Pistons' Chauncey "Guang Hua" Billups (Smooth) and Richard "Mian Ju Ren" Hamilton (Man in the Mask).

Rasheed Wallace was not included in the list, since there is no Chinese translation for, "$#%& You, Ref!"
