Harmon shines for MSU

April 24, 2007
Senior captain Matt Harmon chips onto the green during a practice round April 16. Harmon, a three-time letter-winner, is second all-time at MSU with a 73.74 career stroke average.

Matt Harmon has been on a roll lately.

The senior golfer has made the most out of the spring golf season, finishing all four spring events in the top 10, including back-to-back first-place finishes at the Kepler Invitational two weeks ago and the Fossum/Spartan Invitational last weekend.

As the lone senior on the squad, Harmon's play has catapulted the MSU men's golf team into a great position as it prepares for the Big Ten Championship this weekend.

"This team has really impressed me," Harmon said. "We've played hard and stuck together the whole time. We're really starting to show how much talent we have here."

Harmon's play is a big part of that.

He has finished in the top five this season five times and owns the lowest stroke average on the team.

"I'm coming around," he said. "I feel good about my ball-striking. My chipping and putting have really improved in the past year.

"That's where a stroke here, a stroke there is going to be saved. I'm feeling really good about my game. I've had some nice finishes."

This weekend at the Fossum/Spartan Invitational, Harmon tied a career best with a six-under 66 in the second round en route to a three-way tie for first place overall.

Going into the Fossum/Spartan Invitational, Harmon was the Big Ten's top-ranked golfer in the Golfweek Individual Rankings and 17th in the nation.

"Matt has been our No. 1 player three of the last four years," MSU head coach Mark Hankins said.

"He has been someone that has continually gotten better and was willing to, after a great sophomore year, rework his swing a little bit to try to progress to his goals to be a golf professional in the future."

Harmon is just glad to see his hard work paying off.

"It's a good feeling to have," he said. "It's what you work for all the time. It's what you set your goals for, and to achieve it is even better. I've got to keep it there, but I'm real happy with how quick I caught up to those other guys."

But Harmon almost didn't end up playing golf, as another sport was calling his name for a long time.

"I was about as good a basketball player as I was a golfer until I (got second place) in the state finals my freshman year," he explained.

"That kind of just set me off, and I was ready to go and see what I could do."

It seems like Harmon made the right decision, as he is on pace to begin a pro career when his time at MSU is done.

"I'm going to turn professional. I don't know when — it'll be sometime later this spring or early next fall," he said. "I'm going to be on the PGA Tour. I don't know when, but that's the plan. That's the goal."

But as Harmon's time comes to an end with the Big Ten Championships, and, hopefully an NCAA Regional berth, he looked back with a bit of regret.

"I probably haven't done as much as I could have my first three years," he admitted. "But I feel like this year, all the hard work, all the changes I've made, have really paid off."

Hankins will be sad to see him go.

"Matt has been an exceptional leader," he said. "Four years with him has been really special.

"He's going to leave this place with a lot of records and a lot of good accomplishments."
