After reading Colleen Maxwell's article "Finding Home" (SN 4/2), I had to take a moment and absorb what I had just read because, quite frankly, I was shocked. While the article provided a wonderful insight into the world of adoption, it also made me question some of the arguments presented.

As a person who was adopted at a young age, I have always known I was adopted. Being adopted is a large aspect of who I am, and I am very proud of it.

Although I cannot statistically prove that most adoptees feel this way, I challenge Grant Jin Soo Vella's view that, "The connection with my (adoptive) parents is strong. But not as strong as with a normal parent." To me, and most likely many others who have been adopted, the strength of the connection with my parents cannot compare anywhere near any possible connection with my biological parents. My parents are exactly that — my parents.

Most adopted children, especially those adopted at a young age, will attest to this as well. While the biological parents brought life into this world, the real title of parent goes to those who have raised you and called you their own.
