A 43-year-old man with no university affiliation reported being hit in the chest by a woman during a basketball tournament at the IM Sports-East building Sunday, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The man, from Ada, was coaching a teenage girls' basketball team from Grand Rapids at 7 p.m. that was playing a rival team, also from Grand Rapids. The victim's team had been down by 15 points but had caught up and ended up winning the game by one point. Immediately following the game, the man said he turned around and saw a 6-foot-3-inch woman charging at him, pointing her finger and stating obscenities. She then hit him with two open palms to the chest, McGlothian-Taylor said. The other team's assistant coach approached the two and asked the woman to apologize, which she did. The man called MSU police Monday to report the incident because he said his chest was still sore from the hit. The woman, 47, from Jenison, is actually 5-feet-10-inches tall. The man plans to press charges against the woman.Laura Misjak
