Simon to address university

President to briefly discuss new communications, keep focus on honorees

February 8, 2007

Although she has tackled issues such as the state's affirmative action ban and increasing tuition costs, MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon said she will not go into detail about those subjects during her State of the University speech today.

"What I'm trying to do is set up a communication strategy where you don't have to rely on one event for an update," Simon said. "It really seeps into the computer age that we're into now as opposed to the classical, political-oriented way we handle these events."

She will give a 10-12 minute speech during the Awards Convocation ceremony from 3-4:30 p.m. at Wharton Center. The speech, as well as Proposal 2 information, will appear on the Web site at www.president.msu.edu.

"I want to keep this short enough so that it doesn't deflect from the faculty, students and staff being honored," Simon said. "The statement and the Proposal 2 Web site will be used for people to keep up to date on the information. That's part of the strategy of communication rather than a political speech that's an hour long.

"That would deflect significantly, in my view, from the recognition of the individuals."
