Take a peek behind the curtain and test drive the NEW StateNews.com today!

From the road

Matt Bishop

Women's hoops reporter Matt Bishop spent Thursday through Monday in State College, Pa., and Somerset, N.J., covering the women's basketball team's losses to Penn State and Rutgers. Here is some of what transpired.

There isn't much to State College other than whiteout snow conditions and people not knowing where Bryce Jordan Center is located. Usually, this wouldn't be a problem, except that all the buildings and signs were obscured by the ridiculous snow.

We eventually found our way to the arena, and inside, it's pretty nice.

After the game, we went to Damon's Grill, and once there, I met Jonathan Coachman of WWE fame, who had been calling the game for CSTV. That was fun.

Friday, we made our way to our next destination: Piscataway, N.J., by way of Somerset, N.J.

About two hours into our New Jersey experience (it would've been sooner, but "Little Big League" was on HBO Family), we went to a local mall and State News photographer Brian Cripe had F-bombs dropped on him after accidentally hitting a woman's car with our door as she whipped into the parking space next to ours. Without even checking her door for damage (there was none), she promptly told us, "Don't be surprised if you come back out and you have four flat tires." Then she mumbled something about taking our license plate. All of this talk was unprovoked. In retrospect, it was hilarious.

Also, note to New Jersey residents — Slow down. Never before have I seen the entire flow of traffic moving at 65 mph in a 40 mph construction zone as I did Saturday on U.S. Route 1.

As for Sunday's game, Louis Brown Athletic Center was a neat arena. It is very oddly shaped and is not very pretty from outside, but inside, it is cool. The media seating is about two feet away from the court on the sideline. This means the fans in the front row are right on top of you, and you hear a lot of things.

The media room and pregame spread were well done. Of course, I dig food, so that's a big deal.
