State College, Pa. Bryce Jordan Center continues to be a house of horrors for the MSU women's basketball team.
The No. 23 Spartans took many ill-advised shots and were outhustled by a feisty Penn State team, falling 69-58 Thursday night.
MSU (15-5 overall, 6-2 Big Ten) had no answer for Penn State center Amanda Brown, as she scored 27 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. She had a day at the free-throw line, shooting 11-for-13 from the charity stripe, as the officials sent the Lady Lions to the line early and often in the first half.
The lead went back and forth in the first half as the teams trading baskets, with the Spartans up by two, but the Lady Lions (10-11, 3-5) came back and took a four point lead into halftime, 36-32.
Penn State extended its lead to 10 at the start of the second half, as guard Brianne O'Rourke hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give her team some breathing room.
Down 17 with fewer than 10 minutes left to play, the Spartans tried to fight back, going on a 11-0 run to bring the game to within six at 60-54.
Sophomore forward Aisha Jefferson started the run with back-to-back buckets.
She finished with a team high 17 points.
Penn State would break the run, and the Spartans could never get any closer than six.
What should have been a joyous win for Penn State was marred at the end by O'Rourke's decision to fly in from half-court for a lay-in in the final seconds with the shot clock off with MSU no longer defending.
The uncontested layup was missed, but was followed by Kamela Gissendanner as time expired.
"The kids have apologized for that," Penn State head coach Rene Portland said. "I spoke to the other coach, and it was unfortunate and it won't happen again."
MSU ends its two game road trip at 5 p.m. on Sunday against Rutgers.
