A 26-year-old Twyckingham Apartments resident felt the cold pressure of a gun fixed on the back of his head, and saw his blood soaking into the beige carpet of his first-floor apartment during the early hours of Monday morning, he said.
The resident, who does not want to be identified for fear of his attackers, was a victim of an armed robbery and home invasion, said Sgt. Gregory Frenger of the Meridian Township Police Department.
Police responded to the scene at 3:33 a.m. Monday and arrested five suspects upon arrival at the apartment complex, 4632 S. Hagadorn Road. The suspects were arraigned Tuesday.
The victim and his roommate, along with a female friend, had finished watching a movie and were in their living room when three men and a 21-year-old woman forced their way into the apartment. Rushing toward the door, the 26-year-old victim's head was repeatedly hit with a meat tenderizer, while the female friend jumped from the balcony and ran to the victim's brother's apartment in the next building for help, the male victim said.
None of the suspects or victims have MSU ties.
Once police arrived, a suspicious car was sighted in the parking lot, which led to the arrest of the five Lansing residents. Each suspect is charged with robbery and home invasion, and one had an extra charge of habitual offense, Frenger said. Bonds were set at $100,000 for each suspect, and $105,000 for the suspect with the habitual offense charge.
Frenger said at least one of the victims and one of the suspects knew each other.
The victim whose head was beat with a meat tenderizer said he knew the female suspect through a downstairs neighbor. They had a flirtatious relationship, the male victim said.
"I was suspecting something was fishy," he said. "She would always ask me, 'How do you get your money?'"
The victim was in the process of moving his big-screen television from his apartment Tuesday night, which he plans to leave as soon as possible. Fingerprint dust still covered the door.
"All I know is I'm getting the hell out," he said.
He hasn't slept at his apartment since the incident.
Construction management senior Yaotequia Carrasco lives in the apartment complex and had not heard of the incident until a friend called him.
"Nothing like this has happened since we've been here, but for some reason, it always seems like it could happen," he said, sighting obvious damage done to his door from a previous resident.
"You can tell it's been kicked down before."
