MIDDAY UPDATE: ASMSU representation questioned

January 21, 2007

After the resignation of ASMSU's only female chairperson two weeks ago, some current and former MSU student government members are questioning how the remaining five chairpersons can accurately represent campus.

Julielyn Gibbons, Student Assembly vice chairperson for external affairs for ASMSU, resigned from her post at the organization's Jan. 11 meeting.

Student Assembly Chairperson Roger Ludy briefly mentioned Gibbons' resignation at the meeting, which was effective immediately. Following the announcement, the general assembly voted to elect the new chairperson on Feb. 8.

Although there are no female chairpersons, women currently comprise 55 percent of the student population. All students pay $16.75 per semester for the ASMSU tax.

This has made some female ASMSU members concerned about representation.

Felicia Anderson, former representative of the Council for Students with Disabilities, called the current ASMSU a "good-old-boys' association."

"It's not about the student anymore," Anderson said. "It's about who can get the most connections and who can get the most power."
