Ecotourism destinations found throughout state

November 14, 2006

Walking along trails, traveling on cruise ships and examining nature are all part of getting to know Michigan's environment.

There are dozens of ecotourism spots in Michigan. For those who aren't familiar with environmental terms, "ecotourism" is defined as a respected site where a visitor can learn and explore natural habitats, while trying to reduce the ecological impacts. Here are a few earth-friendly adventures that can be found within our state's borders. This list is sure to help satisfy your latest craving to explore.

Lake Erie Metropark

Named after one of Michigan's Great Lakes, Lake Erie Metropark is home to wildlife, marsh and lagoons. Every fall, the park — which also is a top bird-watching site — hosts the annual Hawkfest, celebrating the migrations of birds of prey. In addition to waterfalls, there is also the Marshlands Museum and Nature Center. For more information, visit http://www.metroparks.com/.

Gallup Park

If you enjoy canoeing, Gallup Park in Ann Arbor is the place for you. The Gallup Park Canoe Livery is seasonal, but there are a wide range of activities to enjoy all year. The park features arched footbridges that connect to a series of small islands. It is located along the Huron River and Geddes Pond. There are also more than three miles of asphalt trails. Metro Beach

Although it may appear to be a beach, Metro Beach in Mount Clemens has more to offer than just sand. The park has a 1,600-foot boardwalk on Lake St. Clair. This is another bird-watching site, as it is home to waterfowl. To explore nature further, the park's nature center features seasonal exhibits and hosts nature walks. Cruises

Yeah, we know winter isn't over yet — it hasn't even arrived. But planning ahead is always an option. The Michigan Sea Grant offers Summer Discovery Cruises from April through October for Michiganians to learn about the Great Lakes. There are a variety of nature cruises to choose from: history, art, wetlands and more. For more information, visit www.miseagrant.umich.edu.

Isle Royale National Park

Isle Royale National Park is located in the northwest corner of Lake Superior.

Visitors can only arrive by boat or seaplane. The park features 165 miles of scenic hiking trails and chances for wildlife observation. For more information, visit www.nps.gov/isro/.
