WHO'S UP?
Michigan and Ohio StateNot only are the Wolverines and Buckeyes playing in the biggest game of the year, but also they're paying albeit indirectly for a small child from Guatemala. Ken and Kristie Sigler, season-ticket holders at Ohio Stadium, are auctioning their seats for Saturday's game on eBay to help pay $30,000 in adoption costs. The minimum bid is set at $1,000.
Randy Moss
The former Marshall and current Oakland Raiders wide receiver has an award named in his honor. The top kick returner in Division-IA football will now be presented with the Randy Moss Return Man Award. Sports information directors from around the country will choose the winner. How will the trophy be paid for?
"Straight cash, homie."
Southern Cal
Thanks to the misfortunes of Auburn, Louisville and Texas, the Trojans jumped from No. 7 to No. 3 in the BCS rankings. If the Trojans win out, they'll likely face Ohio State or U-M in the BCS Championship game. Ahh, a traditional Big Ten vs. Pac-10 matchup. Too bad the national championship game isn't in Pasadena, Calif.
WHO'S DOWN? Jeff Bowden
Bowden, the son of legendary Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden, resigned from his position as the Seminoles' offensive coordinator. The school's boosters paid $537,000 for the buyout. The resignation is effective after Florida State's regular-season finale against Florida on Nov. 25. Bowden has been under fire since last season. The Seminoles rank No. 47 in the nation in scoring offense and hold a 5-5 record including just 3-5 in the ACC.
But then again, if someone were to offer me $537,000 to quit writing this column
Steve Spurrier
The Ol' Ball Coach needs to concentrate on special teams a bit more. South Carolina lost to Florida on Saturday, 17-16, but had three kicks blocked an extra point and two field goals including a 48-yard attempt as time expired that would have given the Gamecocks a monumental upset in The Swamp.
University of Michigan
An e-mail was sent to U-M students this week, advising them to avoid wearing excessive Wolverines fan gear or driving vehicles with Michigan license plates. They want students to avoid conflicts with those big, bad Ohio State fans. Students were also urged to bring their moms along and to respond to any taunting with "My dad could beat up your dad."
