The MSU volleyball team fought hard this weekend, ending with a 3-1 victory against Indiana.
But first on Friday, the Spartans took on No. 11 Purdue at Jenison Field House. The five-match game ended in a 3-2 loss, but some players recorded personal bests. Junior outside hitter Katie Johnson had 35 kills, a career high that also tied the second-highest amount of kills in school history, and senior setter Allison Ianni reached a season high with 67 assists in the match.
"I thought we played very hard throughout the weekend, and I know that we played Purdue very tough," said MSU head coach Cathy George. "It was a very emotional match, a very grueling match, and I thought it was the most fought from both sides."
The next night, the team had a tough start against the Hoosiers, losing the first match, 30-23. However, they stepped up their playing power and won the match in four games, 3-1.
"I know that they wanted to win," George said. "We realized that we did not play or come into the first game as aggressive as we needed to."
Junior outside hitter Ashley Schatzle, freshman middle blocker Vanessa King and Johnson all had double-digit kills. Both Schatzle and Johnson had 19, and King had a career-high of 16 kills.
The match against Indiana improves MSU's record to 10-2 overall and 1-1 Big Ten.
"I think that we pulled a lot of confidence from the weekend," George said. "We felt we could have beaten Purdue, but we did not answer the challenge in some parts of the game that we (now) know we need to do."
