The bartender

August 4, 2006
Kyle Kirby, 23, of East Lansing, has worked at Crunchy's, 254 W. Grand River Ave., as a cook, waiter, bartender and more. Thursday afternoon he pulled six bottled beers made in Michigan.

Hooray for beer.

Novice guzzlers to snobby sippers enjoy the local watering hole, Crunchy's, 254 W. Grand River Ave., because of the beer — why else?

Regularly, the bar has 27 beers on tap, and 13 of them are crafted right here in Michigan. From Bell's Hell Hath No Fury Ale, brewed in Kalamazoo, to King's Mocha Java Stout, brewed in Pontiac, Crunchy's stays true to the mitten state when it comes to alcoholic brew.

East Lansing resident Kyle Kirby, 23, doesn't mind cooking, waiting tables, working the door and serving up drinks as a bartender because he loves the beer and the customers talking about beer.

Kirby has been receiving a paycheck from Crunchy's for three years and said that besides exploring many flavors of beer, the brick joint offers a spot to rub shoulders with the owners of many local brewing companies.

"The owner from Bell's comes in here once and a while, and if he sees anyone drinking Bell's, he'll buy them a beer," Kirby said.

Besides the Bell's Brewery, Inc. leader, the high-ups from Founder's Brewing Co. (Grand Rapids) and Rogue Ales Brewery/Brewer's on the Bay in Oregon have thrown a couple back at Crunchy's.

With its wide variety of local beer, Crunchy's also keeps beers on draft that are seasonal, so the selection is always being revised.
