Assault raises security concerns

Arrest warrant issued for suspect

August 30, 2006

Amber Nusbaum said her friend was just trying to protect her from a "big, scary guy."

That act of chivalry landed the 19-year-old male junior in the hospital for three days with a grade-three concussion, which involves any loss of consciousness.

The student, who said he still can't hear in his left ear, was released from Sparrow Hospital on Tuesday. He said others had to tell him what happened.

"The first time someone told me the whole story, I didn't know what was going on because I was in and out of consciousness — dazed and confused," the student, who did not want to be identified, said Tuesday. "The second time, I was like, 'Wow, this guy really took it that seriously.'"

An arrest warrant has been issued for a Richmond, Mich., man for his involvement in the assault, which took place at East Wilson Hall.

Paul Jeffrey Boudro, 22, allegedly assaulted the off-duty night receptionist at about 3 a.m. Sunday and fled after he refused to provide the proper identification required to enter the building, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

Nusbaum, the nutritional sciences junior who was working as the night receptionist supervisor at the time, said the man was being loud and unruly.

"He was banging on the door and goes, 'I live here, let me in,'" she said.

Boudro, who is not an MSU student, was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the incident, McGlothian-Taylor said.

Boudro refused to hand over his ID, and a friend held the door open for him.

Boudro's friend tried to convince Nusbaum to let him in, McGlothian-Taylor said.

Nusbaum said when Boudro became aggressive, the off-duty receptionist jumped up to defend her.

"They got into a headlock, and the guy picked (my friend) up and threw him right onto his neck," Nusbaum said. "His whole body flopped down."

Blair Schwartz, a no-preference freshman, was in the lobby at the time of the assault and said Boudro ran away after the assault. One of the many people inside the lobby attempted to follow him but was unable to catch up with him, he said.

MSU police have been in contact with Boudro's attorney and have made several requests for him to turn himself in, McGlothian-Taylor said.

The East Wilson Hall entrance was closed while police and medical officials responded to the issue.

The injured student, who had to drop his tae kwon do class due to his injuries, said he wishes the situation had ended differently.

"I'm a little disappointed that I couldn't take care of this guy," he said.
