February is a frightful month in Michigan. It's cold, and usually involves a lot of ice and snow. The only benefit that comes with enduring this kind of weather is being able to enjoy a hot drink. It's likely we were all introduced to hot chocolate and hot apple cider as children in Michigan.
After a long cold day of playing outside we could come home and be comforted by some kind of hot, sugary beverage. As we age, we tend to choose different types of drinks for comfort the kind with alcohol content. If you've never outgrown the classic childhood treat but enjoy a stiff drink once in awhile, the Hot Sugar Rum is the drink for you.
It's the perfect combination of sweetness with a kick that is sure to warm you up after a long day of walking to class. Combine hot apple cider with caramel, add your preferred number of shots and garnish with a cinnamon stick. You can't go wrong with this one.
FYI: This drink contains alcohol, so you must be 21 or older to purchase the rum and legally consume alcohol.
Supplies:
• A shot glass
• A cup suitable for hot drinks
• A microwave or stove to heat the cider
Ingredients:
Apple Cider
Spiced Rum
Caramel
Ground Cinnamon
Directions:
Heat apple cider, add caramel and mix. Then add the shots of rum (we recommend two shots), mix again and sprinkle on a dash of cinnamon then consume slowly to fully appreciate all the flavors involved.
Cost of Items:
About $12 for a fifth of rum we used Bacardi Gold Rum and Meijer didn't have a pint, but that would be cheaper.
The cider was about $2, and the caramel was about $1. The ground cinnamon was about $1.50.
The drink is a little pricey, but well worth it. Overall it was about $17 for all the supplies, but you'll have enough to make numerous drinks. Plus you can use the caramel and cinnamon for other after-school treats.
