From the road

Women's hoops reporter Ethan Conley took a trip down to Ann Arbor for Thursday's regular-season finale victory against Michigan.

Heading to Ann Arbor to watch an athletic contest is usually enough to make a Spartan froth at the mouth. Unless, of course, it's for a women's basketball game.

Imagine how you'd feel if MSU was heading to the Big House to play U-M, and both teams were in the Top 5. Or if the men's hoops squads played a game at Breslin Center where Brent Petway knocked out Shannon Brown's front teeth, and the series was shifting back to Crisler Arena for some Green-and-White revenge.

Feel the hatred yet?

Now imagine the exact opposite of that, and you get an idea of what the atmosphere for Thursday's women's hoops game against the Wolverines was like. Switzerland shows more aggression than a women's basketball crowd at Crisler Arena. I'm sure it doesn't help that the team was 0-15 in the Big Ten. And it definitely doesn't help that more than half the crowd was composed of fans from MSU.

If South Bend can be considered "Spartan Stadium South" for football, you can re-name Crisler Arena "Breslin Center Southeast" for women's basketball. Division II teams put up a bigger fight against MSU in exhibition games than U-M displayed on Thursday.
