As I opened up The State News on Jan. 9, I was very disappointed in what I saw on the front page.
Hoping to see an article about the women's basketball team's exciting victory over Rutgers on Saturday as the headline, I was frustrated to see the page dominated by an article about the men's disappointing losses to Wisconsin and Illinois. As if that wasn't enough, I opened to the Sports section, figuring the women's team would have to get huge coverage on that page, but I was wrong again another big article about the same thing.
The women's coverage consisted of two small blurbs, neither of which was specifically about the Rutgers game. Don't get me wrong, I love both the men's and women's basketball teams, but I'd rather open up the paper and see a joyous celebration instead of heads hanging low.
I guess I was just too naïve to think that the women would get the coverage they deserve. In a sports world dominated by men, the bad news about them still trumps the good news about women.
