Despite not getting elected to the East Lansing City Council, political theory and constitutional democracy senior John Fournier is still our Spartan of the Year.
Through his incredibly professional campaign, Fournier tried to represent the underrepresented student demographic.
Although many students didn't help his goal by not voting, Fournier gave it his all to get them to show up. He was everywhere on campus, talking to voters, chalking sidewalks and even giving free cookies to hungry college students and a free ride to the polls in exchange for voting.
He was the most visible candidate of any of them and needs to continue down this road, because success is in his future if he does.
He might not have a seat on the council, but he won in our minds. Perhaps most important of all, he set the groundwork for future student candidates. Now having a student on City Council isn't an "if," but a "when."
