Monday musings

December 5, 2005

• Calling the Bowl Championship Series "deeply flawed," the chairman of a congressional committee has called a hearing on the controversial system used to determine college football's national champion.

Finally, our elected officials have their priorities straight. What's next, an Executive Order against the wave?

• USC head coach Pete Carroll is reportedly privately protesting that the media is influencing Reggie Bush's decision to turn pro.

Calls to Bush were not immediately returned, but were directed to an answering machine that said: "Thank you for calling Reggie Bush. I'm currently unavailable. If this is the 49ers, my offer is $20 million. If this is the Texans, my offer is $25 million. If this is the Lions, please hang up the phone."

• The New York Yankees reportedly lost between $50 million and $85 million last year.

In a related story, nobody feels sorry for them.

• MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon and Athletics Director Ron Mason came to the defense of head coach John L. Smith at a press conference on Friday, putting to rest rumors that Smith will be fired before next season.

But the press conference did nothing to stop the rampant rumors that soon-to-be-graduated-senior defensive lineman Domata Peko's hair is actually a toupee.
