The foundation of this country is democracy. It's the right of citizens to decide who will represent them in government.

Although you're one person, votes add up. Your voice matters and this is the best way to make it heard.

There are many issues this community faces — most of which are debated and decided by the East Lansing City Council.

Today, two of the council's seats are up for grabs.

We've done the research on the candidates and know their visions for East Lansing. Both John Fournier and Vic Loomis are capable of leading this city to where it needs to be.

With most of the city's issues, we believe these candidates will represent the entire community on the City Council.

A plan is in the works to redevelop East Village by potentially tearing down fraternities and the Cedar Village apartments to rebuild the area to accommodate a more diverse population. While it's only in the initial stages, it could significantly impact a place many students call home.

There is a proposal to add outdoor drinking games as a party indicator in the noise ordinance.

There is another proposal which would force bars to keep a section nonsmoking throughout the night.

The independent commission will release its recommendations regarding the April 2-3 disturbances to the city. Although it doesn't place blame, the report will outline suggestions of how similar situations should be handled. The City Council will be one of the governing bodies looking at the report and can choose to adopt the suggestions.

Relations between students and permanent residents are strained. It's one of those issues that is not easily solved, but needs to be addressed.

Voting is a simple act. Instead of watching those "Boy Meets World" reruns today, gather your friends and head to the voting area in your precinct.
