University officials will present a state budget pitch Friday to the MSU Board of Trustees that pushes for initiatives such as the expansion of international programs and renovation of several campus facilities in the 2006-07 school year.
If the trustees approve the request, it will be sent to the state government.
"What we give to the legislature at this time is our best sense of things," Provost Kim Wilcox said.
Although the appropriation request discusses several positive characteristics of the university and where the money will be spent, it fails to address how much money MSU is requesting.
"You don't put in the numbers, that comes later," said Fred Poston, vice president for finance and operations, adding that he could not say when those numbers would be available
The board also will be updated on the university's budget for the current year, but details haven't been released. Poston declined to comment about the update Tuesday.
MSU's appropriation from the state in 2005-06 was slightly larger than anticipated, Wilcox said, but still will not cover all of the university's needs.
"Our needs are so great that we won't be able to fund all of them, but I'm sure we'll be able to prioritize them," Trustee David Porteous said. "We have some of our buildings and some of our labs that need to be updated."
Another issue the board will look at is the future of University Village on Kalamazoo Street.
It will review a proposal to tear down the apartment complex which currently houses families, international students and graduate students and build new facilities for undergraduates.
University Village is renting 230 out of 456 apartments, said Chuck Gagliano, assistant vice president for Housing & Food Services.
If this proposal is approved, residents will have until May 31 to vacate, Gagliano said.
Angela Brown, director of University Housing, said the reason for the proposal is that the existing apartments "require a lot of maintenance" and are "not economically feasible" to maintain.
The project is scheduled to be completed by fall 2007.
