In response to Rick Chasney's letter "SN cartoon wrong, abortion, war same" (SN 10/12), I want to fully support cartoonist Mike Ramsey for what I thought was a courageous and devastatingly honest piece of artwork.
To Chasney, you should be ashamed of yourself. The Religious Right (not rights as you say) does threaten a woman's right to choose and yes, a woman's right to choose is, you guessed it, a women's rights issue.
A friend of mine was recently called a baby killer for refusing to take literature from an offensive anti-choice activist. The activist was a middle-aged man. Like my friend said to me about it, "Get a uterus, and then we'll talk." So Rick, you can do the same.
And instead of comparing abortion to the Iraq war, which is heinous seeing as how one is a personal choice and the other a violent act of colonialism paid for by the American people, look at it the other way around. Isn't it a little ironic that the many "pro-life" supporters also support the death penalty and the Iraq war?
No woman wants to have an abortion. But women need to have full control of their own bodies, period. This is a fundamental human right for women and of a democratic society.
As for Ramsey, your comic highlighted a frightening sequence of rollbacks that could indeed play itself out. I've cut it out and it's your first comic to earn a proud spot on my bulletin board.
