Spartans continue hot streak

September 12, 2005
MSU freshman forward Lauren Carter goes up for a header against Toledo defender Kirsty Wilson. MSU defeated Toledo 4-0, improving their record to 3-1-2 overall.

After a close match against Bowling Green Friday night, the MSU women's soccer team picked up its game and defeated Toledo 4-0 Sunday, despite high game-time temperatures.

It also was the 20th anniversary for the Spartans which was celebrated during halftime. About 40 alumnae received a plaque commemorating the team's anniversary, MSU Sports Information said.

"(The players) were inspired by the alumni being here and the game on Friday," MSU head coach Tom Saxton said.

Saxton said senior forward Emma Harris played well by "putting in two goals and threatening (Toledo) early" during the first half.

Both assists for Harris' goals were from junior forward Jenee Witherspoon. Also during the first half, senior midfielder Erin Konheim scored her first goal of the season, beating Toledo's goalkeeper Jen Whipple. Konheim's goal was assisted by Harris and senior forward Dana Voorhies.

The only goal scored during the second half was from senior forward Shannon Collar with assists from Witherspoon and junior midfielder Linsey Laskowski.

Saxton had high praise for sophomore defenseman Erin Doan.

Doan said the defense played more aggressively in Sunday's game than on Friday.

"It's all communication and today, I think we all communicated well," said Doan. "It was a 180 from Friday's game."

Saxton was pleased with the overall effort but said the team still has aspects that need to be worked on as it prepares for the next game on Friday.

"We need to be consistent throughout the 90 minutes," Saxton said.

The Spartans defeated Bowling Green in another nonconference game Friday, 1-0.

Harris scored the lone goal of the game, her second goal of the season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Galas had her third shutout of the season.

MSU will be back in action at 7:30 p.m. on Friday when it heads out on the road to face Akron.
