Accused embezzler was mother figure

There is no doubt that the article "Ex-staffer charged with embezzling" (SN 9/27) thoroughly explored the legal and ethical ramifications of Raye Grill's alleged actions. However, I think you have left readers with a one-sided impression of Grill.

As an MSU School of Journalism alumnus and someone who was greatly impacted by Grill's support, I feel that I am well qualified to speak of her love and devotion for her students. I will touch on only a few of the many reasons why Grill is beloved by so many School of Journalism alumni.

During her time at MSU, Grill was always quick to offer her students sage advice, kind words of encouragement and a shoulder to lean on. She was like a second mother to many of us and, like a proud mother, she would beam with pride as her students reached personal, academic and professional goals.

Grill went the extra mile for her students, taking an active role in ensuring that the school graduated good people, as well as excellent journalists. I believe I speak for many of my fellow graduates when I say that she made MSU and the School of Journalism an inviting place where we felt safe and cared for.

Whether the allegations prove true or not, people should understand that Grill is a good person. Good people can make bad decisions. Ultimately, I believe that Raye Grill should and will be defined by a much greater legacy - her positive impact on so many students.
