Venues aplenty in Lansing

August 24, 2005
A crowd watches a couple dance on the lower floor of Club Southtown, 1146 S. Washington Ave. in Lansing, at a night dance party. The club plays hip-hop music on the first floor and Latin music upstairs.

If you're a lover of live music, Spartans, then you're in luck: The East Lansing area is the perfect place to get your groove on, no matter what kind of tunes move you.

Housed in a 100-year-old church, The Temple Club offers great acoustics unlike any other venue.

National touring acts play to sold-out crowds weekly on the building's upper level, while local bands pack the cozy Red Light Lounge downstairs. Featuring rock, hip-hop, twang, punk, jazz and electronica, dance nights on the weekends and an "open decks night" for aspiring DJs on most Tuesdays.

A chill spot to catch great local bands and national names as well. Catch anything from hip-hop to twang-rock to space jam music. Relax at a table, get down on the dance floor or dip into the old-fashioned popcorn machine near the bar. The bar is conveniently located next to Theio's Restaurant, 2650 E. Michigan Ave. Theio's is open 24 hours, allowing you and your pals to discuss how great that night's show was over coffee or a plate of french fries.

Best place to jam

• Magdalena's Tea House, 2006 E. Michigan Ave. in Lansing

One of the newest additions to the local venue lineup, Magdalena's is warm, cozy and features wonderful acoustics. Rich colors saturate the walls, lush rugs cover the floor and cushy couches create an artsy vibe.

The live music experience is rich, too, including acoustic shows by local and national artists, open-mic music nights and open-mic poetry readings.

Weekly open jam sessions bring out the eclectic talents of local musicians; you can find people playing everything from banjos to saws. Yes, we said saws.
