Nick Simmons named outstanding wrestler

Sophomore Nick Simmons was awarded the MSU wrestling team's 2005 Outstanding Wrestler Award at the team's banquet held Sunday at Kellogg Center.

Simmons went 32-4 this season, including a fourth-place finish at the 2005 NCAA Championships. Simmons also picked up the Most Exciting Wrestler Award.

His brother, Andy, picked up the Most Falls Award, with 11 pins on the season, and also the Tom Muir Most Improved Award. He finished the season with a 32-6 record.

Junior Darren McKnight earned two awards - the Perseverance Award for dedication and work ethic and the Grady Peninger Scholastic Achievement Award.

Freshmen Ryan Froese and Greg Goidosik were given the 2005 Commitment Award and Joe Williams won the Outstanding Freshman Award with a 22-8 record.

Junior R.J. Boudro was awarded the Collins-Mikles Award for leadership.

Nick Simmons also was named the outstanding wrestler at the 2005 Freestyle University National Championships, held this past weekend at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill., pinning four of five opponents.
