Knot a tie

April 6, 2005
Zoology sophomore Nathan Hopkins sports a bow tie.

The Rat Pack. Just the name itself exudes cool.

Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford were in their heyday more than 40 years ago, but their class and demeanor is rare these days.

One recognizable trait of the bunch is the way they dressed. Tailored pants, sweaters with snazzy prints, and the bow tie.

At left, zoology sophomore Nathan Hopkins brings back the style. His boyfriend, mathematics junior Aaron Steppe, lent him the outfit.

"It represents a brand of style from the '40s and '50s that we lose in our retrospection of style," Steppe said.

Here's how to get the look.

1. Bow tie. Getting ahold of a bow tie is easy - check out any men's store. Actually tying one can be difficult. Visit tie-a-tie.net for the specifics.

2. Form-fitting V-neck sweater with retro print. It's important the sweater is a V-Neck so the tie can be shown off.

3. Oxford dress shirt. Make sure it's a solid color so it won't clash with the sweater or the pattern of the tie.

4. Slim-fitting pants. This look would appear awkward with loose pants. Go with khakis, but jeans can also be worn.
