Haynie anticipating pro draft

April 14, 2005

During her four-year career at MSU, senior guard Kristin Haynie has accomplished quite a bit and it is only fitting that she moves on to the WNBA, which is where she will be heading after the draft on Saturday in New Jersey.

"I am just really excited to have the opportunity to play at the next level," Haynie said. "I don't care when I get drafted, or who I get drafted by. The chance to play is all I care about."

Haynie has been one of the top point guards in the nation all year and after leading MSU on its historic run in the NCAA Tournament, her stock went up and she potentially could be a first-round selection.

During the tournament, Haynie averaged 12 points per game, 6.7 assists per game, three steals per game and 7.3 rebounds per game. Those numbers also include the triple-double she picked up against Vanderbilt in the Sweet 16, just the second-ever triple-double recorded in MSU women's basketball history.

"She has gotten better each year that she has been here and she has not shown signs that she will stop getting better," MSU head coach Joanne P. McCallie said.

Since Haynie arrived at MSU, just about everything that has to do with her game has improved, McCallie said. She also said Haynie has become stronger and quicker. She added that Haynie has become a better passer, which in turn makes her teammates better, and her anticipation on defense just continues to show up all the time.

McCallie knows that with the ability to play, Haynie will just add to her strong abilities she already has.

Haynie said her hard work will eventually pay off, but knows that this is just the beginning.

"College has really prepared me for what lies in front of me," Haynie said. "I am taking a short break, but it will be right back to the gym at the end of the week and training camp begins soon."

As she has during her four years here, Haynie got some advice from her coach about the future.

"I just told her that she can't care about the numbers involved with the draft," McCallie said. "She needs to be excited about the opportunity and just has to let the other stuff take care of itself."

Although Haynie has a lot to offer to a professional team, there are still expectations that need to be met.

"She is going to need to produce at the next level," McCallie said. "She will have to lead her team and be a strong leader, but she is very comfortable in the role. It is a great opportunity for Kristin and a well deserved one also."
