A 43-year-old male from Delton, Mich., reported a fire between 6 p.m. and 6:41 p.m. Friday in a metal vent in the Psychology Research building, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The man, an outside contractor, was working in the basement of the building when he smelled smoke and called police. An officer dispatched to the scene also smelled smoke and had people evacuate the building. The East Lansing Fire Department determined insulation had caught on fire, causing about $100 in damages to the vent, McGlothian-Taylor said.• An unknown flaming item thrown into a West Wilson Hall basement trash compactor started a fire between 10:30 p.m. and 10:40 p.m. Friday, McGlothian-Taylor said.Haze and an odor of smoke were initially detected on the fifth floor of the building, she said. There was no visible damage to the compactor and no visible explanation for how the fire started.A large pool of water accumulated on the floor of the compactor room from the fire sprinkler system, which was shut off upon the police and fire departments' arrival, McGlothian-Taylor said. Several drains in the floors allowed for water drainage, and there was no apparent water damage. The case is still under investigation.• About $1,850 of furniture was stolen between 9 p.m. Thursday and 6:30 a.m. Friday from an Emmons Hall study and TV lounge, McGlothian-Taylor said.A $1,250 brown and burgundy love seat and two tables valued at $300 each were taken. The case is still under investigation.Lauren Phillips
