Overlapping layers

You know the phrase, "Keep it simple, stupid?" Whoever invented that phrase should be thrown off the top of Hubbard Hall and fall face flat on the icy concrete below. Keeping it simple is just a stupid thing to do. Just a T-shirt or just a sweater is too easy. Don't be afraid to rock two or more layers at a time. Go ahead, mix and match. Show off that wardrobe of yours. It won't hurt. Chances are, you have these items in your closet already, so it's not hard to pull off the following looks:

1. Blazers over sweatshirts, track jackets or T-shirts. Contrary to popular belief, Usher did not invent this style. True hipsters were rocking the blazer way before the cheating R&B singer, and their middle school English teachers were doing it before them. The blazer should be a staple in everyone's wardrobe because of its versatility - what else can you wear to a fancy dinner party and to a house party? The tighter fitting the blazer, the better, but don't cut your circulation off. For more modern styles, check out Express or Marshall Field's. But for an old-school look, Salvation Army all the way.

2. Sweaters over collars. Face facts - the preppy look won't go away. But it's not a bad thing. This gives you a clean and versatile look, good for casual and formal events. Make sure the sweater is a crewneck or V-neck - SN Style favors the classic crewneck - and the collars of the undershirt are ironed and wrinkle-free. Be careful not to mix patterns - a striped sweater with a solid collar works and vice versa, but too many stripes is dizzying. Also, do everyone a favor and keep the collars down; Elvis is dead.
