Area holds live jazz, indy

Just because it's not the weekend yet doesn't mean you can't still rock out.

There's plenty of live local music happening in the area this week to tide you over until Friday and Saturday night.

Sick of the East Lansing scene? Check out some of the original shows in Lansing.

Don't feel like driving? There's some great performances just a short walk away on campus. Whether you're in the mood for jazz, country or good ol' fashioned rock, there are all kinds of music for the masses happening right here, right now.

Tonight

The music: MSU Vocal Jazz Ensemble
The venue: Auditorium of the Music Building
The extras: Cost is $8, $6 for senior citizens, free for students and those under age 18. Show starts at 7:30 p.m.
The School of Music's newest performance ensemble takes the stage tonight to showcase its vocal jazz skills.

The eight-member group will perform jazz standards made famous by artists such as Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Miles Davis, George and Ira Gershwin, Nina Simone and more.

Some songs will be sung by the entire ensemble, and others will be performed by soloists.


The music: Open Mic Night with Jen Sygit
The venue: Dagwood's Tavern & Grill, 2803 E. Kalamazoo St. in Lansing
The extras: No cover charge. Ages 21 and up, please. Music starts at 10 p.m.
Music pros and newbies alike share the spotlight at this weekly low-key open mic night.

Local singer/songwriter Jen Sygit hosts the evening.

Expect to hear soloists and group jams playing every kind of music imaginable, including bluegrass, blues, jazz, country, rock and more.

Arrive early to secure a spot on the list of performers or come just to sit back and take in the eclectic mix of live tunes.


Wednesday

The music: Honest D and The Steel Reserve, The Gentlemen Callers
The venue: Mac's Bar, 2700 E. Michigan Ave. in Lansing
The extras: Cost is $5 for ages 21 and up, $6 for ages 18 to 20. Doors open at 8 p.m.
It'll be a country kind of night as Lansing band Honest D and The Steel Reserve revives the Grand Ol' Opry style of western swing and honky-tonk with another local twang act, The Gentlemen Callers. Put your dancin' shoes on and get ready to boot scoot the night away.


The music: Hot Pink Karma, Storm Crow, Lost Without Leaving, Fighting Hellfish, Vega
The venue: Temple Club, 500 E. Grand River Ave. in Lansing
The extras: $5 for ages 21 and up, $8 for ages 18 to 20. Doors open at 8 p.m.
Indie-funk duo Hot Pink Karma heads up the local-happy lineup in Lansing.

But the music doesn't stop with the funk; the rest of the bands will bring their own unique blends of rock and punk to the table as well.


Thursday

The music: Roundabout Way
The venue: Rick's American Café, 224 Abbott Road
The extras: Cost is $4. Ages 21 and up only. Doors open at 7 p.m.
It's been two years since local rock band Roundabout Way graced East Lansing with a live performance. Now, after some lineup changes and intensive practicing, the band is back and ready to wow Mid-Michigan audiences with its original tunes.
