I agree that rape is a problem that society as a whole needs to address and deal with. However, until such time as rape and other sexual assaults become extinct, we need to face the reality of the situation.

Rape and other related crimes do happen. Women are the primary targets of these crimes. It is a necessity for women today to be able to protect themselves from this violence.
Is it unfair? Yes. Is this a curable crime? Again, yes. But, until it is cured, the reality of this violence needs to be faced head on, not ignored or dismissed. To not be prepared to face that fact is simply ignoring reality.
I agree that as unfair, unforgivable and unjust as such crimes may be, it is a profound reason for everyone, especially women, to be prepared to defend themselves from violence.
