In response to the editorial that portrayed the Spartan's football season as commendable (SN 11/22), I say it was disgraceful. This editorial is the very reason our football team's record is a depressing 5-6. There should be no one at this university who accepts a .500 season. By commending the Spartan football season, we learn to accept mediocrity.
There is no place for moral victories in football, and I don't think that blowing a 17-point lead to Michigan in the last four minutes of the fourth quarter should be considered a moral victory.
We will never be Big Ten champions with attitudes like this. Instead of commending the team we should be demanding satisfaction. Satisfaction is at least making it to a bowl game. But I guess that is what we get when we accept this level of playing. I think The State News should do the rest of the university a favor and refrain from printing such garbage so that mediocrity is not accepted when it comes to a 6-6 season. All The State News is doing is fostering the idea that it is OK to be 6-6. But like the editorial says, "the Spartans are one of, it not the best, .500 teams in the nation." And if that is what we strive for here at the university, then we can consider ourselves champions of the .500 world.
