ASMSU proposes student-only tailgate area

The 'Drinko' boards are now stowed away safely for winter and the despondency surrounding tailgating restrictions are lessening.

But ASMSU is still working to keep tailgating excitement that was lost earlier this football season.

MSU's undergraduate student government's Student Assembly passed a bill on Thursday to propose a student-only tailgate area at the Wilson tennis courts.

Only tailgaters with an MSU student ID would be allowed to enter. Those 21 and older would get a bracelet to allow them to drink alcohol, and those younger would be marked with green X's on each hand. Students would be allowed four visitors.

Large-structure drinking games would probably not be reinstated, but smaller ones such as beer pong and flip cup might.

"The majority of problems aren't coming from (students)," said Andrew Schepers, Student Assembly chairperson who helped shape ASMSU's tailgating proposal. "It makes me upset when people are saying it's the students - truthfully, it's not. Students are more responsible with drinking than others."

Schepers said recent alumni and other Spartans fans might be responsible for tailgating problems.

He said tailgating has experienced "a loss of enthusiasm and a loss of excitement" across campus, and a student-only tailgate would help to reverse this.

"This is something students can take ownership of," Schepers said.

He added because students would have their own area at the tennis courts, there would be less congestion from non-student fans looking for tailgating areas.

ASMSU's proposal also calls for a DJ and food vendors at the courts.

A DJ would help attract students, and again create a fun tailgating atmosphere, said Andrew Bell, ASMSU's Student Assembly external vice chairperson.

He said ASMSU is working to provide tailgating games, such as basketball and football for students, and use Corner Blitz tickets as prizes for winners.

"It's (student's) area," he said. "If it gets messy, there's accountability - there's no excuses."

He added that tailgating would now be "on the student's shoulders," and if they received a high number of minor in possessions, or went to the hospital with a high blood alcohol content, the area would be shut down.

No-preference sophomore Betsy Brugger said she tailgated at the tennis courts last year and would return if it was a student-only tailgate area even though she isn't 21 years old.

"It would be good to have a sectioned off area," Brugger said.

Bell said tailgate rules will probably be finalized in March so students have time to understand them before the next football season.
