The presumption that students don't vote and are not politically active could soon be changing.
In a campuswide effort to get students registered to vote for the November elections, the new Spartan Vote student organization teamed up with ASMSU, MSU's undergraduate student government, at Party at the Aud on Saturday.
The East Lansing Secretary of State branch office was also on hand to assist students with address and residency changes.
Students who stopped by the table were excited about the chance to have their voice heard.
"This is a great opportunity because I didn't know how to register to vote, and it's very convenient," merchandising management senior Brandi Colthorp said. "We have the option to vote. In some countries, people don't even have the right to vote, so we need to exercise that right."
In addition to registration, students could sign up to receive e-mails about presidential candidates.
"We think it's important that students receive unbiased information about the presidential candidates, that way, they can choose the candidate they feel will best represent them," Spartan Vote Vice President Adam Zemke said.
About 100 students registered and said they plan to vote in the upcoming presidential election, which was a good start for the registration drive, said Ryan Young, Spartan Vote president.
"Legislature doesn't listen to students because they think students don't vote," Young said. "We need to vote because it could have a long term effect, or it could affect something as small as campus parking."
ASMSU and Spartan Vote will team up with Residence Halls Association and other campus organizations for registration drives in the dorms and on football Saturdays for the November elections.
People can also register to vote before the Oct. 4 deadline at local secretary of state branch offices.
