Olympic trials don't go well for Spartans

July 13, 2004

MSU All-American Steve Manz advanced to the finals in the shot put at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials this weekend as he placed eighth in the qualifying round.

Twelve competitors advanced to the finals, but only the top three finishers earn spots on the U.S. Olympic team.

Manz finished third for his single throw on Friday night, but only eighth in the overall score. Manz was the highest-placing collegiate competitor in the field.

Despite his earlier performance, Manz finished 11th in the finals recording a top throw of 60-feet-8 1/2. Manz's throw that earned him a place in the finals was 62-feet-8 3/4.

Former Spartan Okoineme Giwa-Agbomeirel missed the finals of the long jump with a 13th place finish in the qualifying round. Giwa-Agbomeirel leaped 24-feet-10 1/2, which was not far behind the 11th place score of 25-feet-2 1/2.

MSU's Sherita Williams did not reach the final round in the triple jump as she fouled on all three of her jumps in the qualifying round
