Lugnuts win, 7-0

July 12, 2004
Lansing Lugnuts pitcher Ronald Bay tosses against the Burlington Bees on Sunday at Oldsmobile Park in downtown Lansing.

Lansing - The Lugnuts were seeking to split their series with the Burlington Bees on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Oldsmobile Park.

They were able to accomplish the split with a combination of good pitching and even better hitting en route to a runaway 7-0 victory over the Bees.

The pitching was phenomenal for the Lugnuts (8-10). Lansing starter Ronald Bay pitched a solid game as he went seven innings, giving up five hits, no earned runs, no walks while striking out seven.

"My confidence is pretty far up there now," Bay said. "I go out there and just do my job."

Lansing manager Julio Garcia was impressed by Bay's shutout performance.

"(Bay) did a very nice job," Garcia said. "He really could have gone a bit longer."

While Bay was shutting down the Bees, the Lugnuts offense provided him with tons of support. Lansing finished the game with seven runs and 16 hits.

"Our attitudes have been different, we were a lot more relaxed at the plate today," Lansing first baseman Brian Dopirak said.

Right fielder Tony McQuade led the way for the Lugnuts, going 3-3 with two runs scored.

"We are right there, we have been so close, this team is starting to mold," McQuade said. "This team is going places."

The Lugnuts opened the game with three base hits but could only produce one run in the bottom of the first inning.

Burlington managed to keep the ball game close until the bottom of the sixth inning holding the score to only 2-0 Lansing, despite the nine hits Lansing had at the time.

Lansing left several on the base paths, but Garcia felt that the Lugnuts were simply getting out of the slump they had been going through.

"When you get in those slumps like we have been, you can't seem to get anything to fall," Garcia said.

The Lugnuts pulled away from Burlington in the bottom of the sixth inning, when right fielder Ryan Fitzgerald scorched a double to the left field corner to bring in two runs for the Lugnuts.

Fitzgerald was then brought in to score on an RBI single by shortstop Carlos Rojas, making the game 5-0 Lansing.

Lansing definitely had their bats in full swing against the Bees as every player recorded a hit in Sunday's game as they added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Lugnuts bullpen finished the game strongly for Lansing and preserved the shutout.

Relievers Randy Wells and Reid Willet each pitched solid innings. Wells struck out two of the three batters he faced.

The 7-0 victory was the first shutout for the Lugnuts since May 11, also against Burlington.

Dopirak's 27 game hitting-streak ended on Friday night, but it seemed more of a relief for Dopirak as he went 2-4 at the plate and scored a run on Sunday.

"No matter how much you try to block (the hitting-streak) out, it is always there, and you put a little added pressure on yourself," Dopirak said.

The Lugnuts have a two-day break before they return to play at Peoria on Wednesday night.
