Proposed soft drink tax problematic

I am concerned with the recent news that soft drinks could be taxed in the future. I strongly disagree with taxing soft drinks.

Many students like to grab a cold soda on their way to class to refresh their minds. Now, the Michigan government wants to discourage soda consumption by collecting taxes. The rationale is that soft drink is one of the primary junk foods, which adds to the health crisis in the state.

I question the effectiveness of taxing soda. A 5-15 percent tax would be affordable. But if it were taxed 20-40 percent, the range would be too high. It would eventually lead to a protest by the soft drink manufacturers. In addition, if soft drinks are taxed, should other snacks be taxed? If it is the case, what else should be taxed?

Alcohol and tobacco products are taxed. The government collects taxes from these products to discourage consumption. However, it is not effective at all. People are still buying alcohol and underage drinking is an inevitable problem. Therefore, taxation is not a long-term remedy. The government has the responsibility to educate the public. Public service announcements, television ads and campaigns are effective ways to promote a healthy diet, just like the no drunk driving and anti-drugs campaigns.
