The low-lit room brought back memories of a scene at a high-school prom.
Twinkling lights and the spinning disco ball set the mood.
Taffeta and velvet dresses covered the dance floor, sparkling and twirling to the music.
The DJ played tunes from all decades: a little Don MacLean, some Bon Jovi and Beyoncé ignited the dancing urges of the participants. "Oh, we're halfway there. Oh, we're livin' on a prayer ? " echoed throughout the ballroom.
About 200 MSU students and their friends purchased tickets for Student Alumni Foundation Winter Formal.
For many, a whole evening was made out of going to the formal. General management freshman Devin Johnson tried to go out to eat before, but area restaurants were full, causing her to resort to a less swanky dining place.
"We went to Burger King all dressed up," Johnson said.
But the winter formal wasn't everyone's idea of a good time. For Western Michigan University freshman Scott Jewett and his friends, the dance turned out to be quite boring.
"My watch is moving very slow," he said.
Jewett's friend, no-preference freshman Megan Messana, was a little disappointed in the dance.
"The music is hard to dance to," she said. "We came in and Frank Sinatra was playing."
Music choice wasn't the only thing that worried Messana and Jewett. When they arrived at 8:30 p.m., they said only eight people were there.
"I hope the alumni association doesn't lose money on this," Jewett said.
But It appeared that most of the 200 ticket holders showed up and foundation officials expected to make a profit - something they failed to do last year.
Dollars collected went toward the Save Our Sparty Campaign.
