Two pedestrians were sent to the hospital in separate early-morning drunken driving accidents in East Lansing.
East Lansing police Capt. Juli Liebler said a person was crossing the road near the corner of Albert Avenue and Bailey Street around 1:20 a.m. on Friday when a man struck the person with his vehicle and continued driving.
Police had no further information on the person who was hit.
The driver, a Livonia resident, was apprehended by Meridian Township police in the parking lot of Old Country Buffet in Okemos and arrested for drunken driving.
Liebler said after the accident, a driver for Big Daddy Taxi followed the Livonia man down Grand River Avenue and called police.
Zoology junior Brian Baker said he was studying in the lower level of the Haslett Arms Apartments on Collingwood Drive when he learned about the accident.
"My roommate heard the sirens," Baker said. "We could see the lights flashing outside.
"It wasn't expected. I haven't heard of anyone getting hit here before."
Communication senior Josh Jolly looked out from his apartment window on Albert Avenue and said he saw a victim lying in the middle of the street, covered with a blanket by paramedics.
"It looked pretty bad," Jolly said. "There were cop cars and a bunch of people waiting around."
Police expect to have more information on the accident today.
A second alcohol-related accident occurred Saturday morning on Grand River Avenue.
In that incident, a 19-year-old MSU student was struck by a pickup truck at about 2 a.m. as he attempted to cross the street near Stoddard Avenue.
The student, a Bad Axe resident, was transported to Lansing's Sparrow Hospital for treatment of extensive injuries.
East Lansing police Sgt. William Mitchell said as of Sunday, the student is in stable condition.
The driver, a 23-year-old Haslett man, was arrested at the scene on alcohol-related charges. Mitchell said he since has been released on bond.
Police blocked off the street from Stoddard Avenue to Spartan Street for at least three hours to investigate the scene.
Packaging junior Peter Bernabe was walking to his apartment in the Chalet Apartments on Grand River Avenue when he saw the accident scene.
"I didn't know what to think," he said. "I asked a police officer, and he told me that someone got hit."
Bernabe said since his apartment is located so close to the accident scene, the incident will make him more cautious when walking in that area.
"I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often," he said. "This is a busy area.
"You don't know who has been drinking."
