Tada! : Sound art

February 5, 2004

What is it exactly?: If your CD rack is lackluster and your living room looks dull and dead, this craft is for you. It puts your favorite tunes in view with easy accessibility.

Usefulness factor: This crafty creation serves as a display for your finest musical selections with a unique touch of artistic edge. It'll literally spin your favorite musical selections and add a touch of color, provided you don't use a bunch of blank, burned CDs. Each of the plastic sleeves can be updated to suit your current musical tastes.

Materials needed:

  • 12 of your finest musical selections>
  • 6 plastic CD sleeves
  • Fishing line or some twine
  • A pair of scissors
  • A few pieces of tape
  • A medium sized key chain ring
  • Pipe cleaners (optional)

Get Started:

1. Fill both sides of each CD sleeve with your best tunes.

2. Cut five plastic sleeves as close to the CDs as possible, but not too close, or the CDs will fall out. Make sure to leave a small section at the top of each sleeve to attach string.

3. Poke five holes into the sixth plastic sleeve, four at each corner and one through the manufacturer's hole of the CD.

4. Cut the string into five sections of varied lengths and tie the ends around the key chain ring.

5. Feed the other ends of the string through the five holes in the sixth plastic sleeve.

6. Tie one CD to the end of each dangling string at different levels and knot to keep in place. You should now have four CDs dangling down.

7. There should now be a string hanging down through the middle of the mobile. Tie the sixth and last CD to the end of it.

8. Find a spot to hang the mobile. Spin some tunes as you spin your creation.

Total cost: Materials gathered from Meijer totaled around $4 (including the CD sleeves and twine).

Challenge level: On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the Martha Stewart challenge, this is a 5. In theory, this project could be pulled off by a third-grader, but if you don't belong to the crafty class, pulling a few strings may be a little tedious and time consuming.

Our thoughts: This little craft puts a new spin on the traditional CD case. It's a sound little way to show off your CDs and add a little artistic appeal to your room without spending a small fortune at the mall. But beware, if you're one of those people who always gets teased for an adamant love of Hilary Duff's tunes, perhaps it wouldn't be very wise to publicly display your less-than-par musical tastes.
