MIDDAY UPDATE: Sharpton visits 'U'

Democratic presidential hopeful the Rev. Al Sharpton visited campus and spoke briefly Thursday, making himself the third candidate to visit East Lansing in the race for the Democratic nomination.

Sharpton outlined his policies to the group of almost 50 people gathered in the Multicultural Center, and encouraged them not only to vote in Saturday's Democratic caucus, but to convince others to vote.

"You'll be able to make a significant statement of where we are in this country and where we need to be," he said.

The national economy was among the issues the civil rights activist discussed.

"They say we're in a recovery in this country," Sharpton said. "Well, who's recovering are the people who weren't sick.

"The people who need to recover are the unemployed and underemployed."

Sharpton also talked about education, health care and job creation.
