Copying most-used service of ASMSU

Rob Schneider's "makin' copies" skit from "Saturday Night Live" easily could be re-enacted in 307 Student Services.

The copy machine in ASMSU's business office of MSU's undergraduate student government's most widely used service.

Last academic year, more than 11,000 copies were made each month, said Deb Gleason, an ASMSU business office employee. ASMSU began offering copy services about 10 years ago.

"ASMSU has really promoted it the last couple of years, and after that, it was word of mouth," she said.

Accounting junior Kevin Garry said he heard about the service from a friend who often stopped by to make copies for a student investment association.

"It's the cheapest," he said, as he made copies of his résumé for a recent career fair.

Unless students have a complex graphic to copy, the 4-cent price is the reason most stop in, Gleason said.

People can make copies in residence halls for 10 cents per copy, or at the MSU Library for 8 cents at the copy center.

"We get a lot of (registered student organizations) doing fliers promoting events," she said.

Money made from the copies goes into a discretionary fund, but it's not much, because ASMSU has to cover the cost of toner, paper and copy machine repairs. The service usually breaks even.

Last semester, ASMSU members voted to purchase a new copy machine.

"It was 10 years old and just kept breaking down," said Academic Assembly Chairperson Jared English. "It was just cheaper to buy a new copier rather than pay for repairs."

English said the organization wasn't planning on expanding its copy services, and one copy machine was sufficient with the number of customer requests.

ASMSU's other services include legal services, free testing blue books and $100 interest-free loans.

ASMSU loan clerk Mark VandeWeile said he generally helps people who are copying books or coursepacks.

"I haven't seen people copying body parts or anything," he said.
