Tennis teams sweep weekend tourneys

The MSU women's tennis team captured its first win of the season on Saturday and followed up with another victory on Sunday to bring its season record to 2-2.

In the Spartans' home opener, the team defeated Bowling Green 6-1, taking all three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches.

The Spartans continued their success on Sunday by downing Toledo 6-1.

Senior Caroline Lay, junior Keri Thompson, and freshmen Sarah Andrews, Jessica Baron and Pascale Schnitzer all won both of their singles matches.

The Spartans will next compete when they host Eastern Michigan at 6 p.m. on Feb. 6 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.

The MSU men's tennis team swept its doubleheader on Saturday, beating both Butler and Cleveland State 7-0.

The Spartans (4-0) dominated singles and doubles matches against both teams, making this victory the team's 10th straight doubleheader sweep.

Junior Andrew Formanczyk, No. 1 in the lineup and ranked at No. 100 in the nation, took both his singles matches, keeping him undefeated as a ranked contender.

The team will next compete at 12 p.m. Saturday against No. 52 Louisville at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.

The Spartans also will host a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. Sunday as they face No. 30 Wake Forest, followed by Valparaiso at 5 p.m.
