Snow falls on 'U'

January 15, 2004
Elementary education sophomore Laura Prochaska walks from class in the snow Wednesday afternoon near Student Services. As of 3:30 Wednesday, 3 inches had fallen with an estimate of 1 to 2 more inches in the evening.

As if a broken foot isn't difficult enough for a student trying to get around campus, 3 inches of snow doesn't make it any easier.

English junior Lindsay Kosmala broke her foot last Saturday and spent Wednesday wrestling with her crutches on the snowy sidewalks.

"Having to get books and go to class with a broken foot in a snowstorm is way more than I wanted to do in the first week of school," she said.

Three days into the spring semester, students are not only adjusting to a new schedule of classes, but to Michigan's typical winter weather. According to meteorologist David Beachler of the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, as of 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Lansing area received 3 inches of snow, and 1 to 2 inches were expected to fall during the remainder of the afternoon.

This storm has swept through the northern Midwest, hitting northern Minnesota and Wisconsin with snow.

"We call these storms 'clippers' because they are fairly quick," Beachler said.

With the winter weather comes both snow and ice, causing local roads and sidewalks to be dangerous.

"Coming down Harrison (Avenue), I was getting ready to turn, and I couldn't stop, I couldn't brake. I almost ran into the back of a car," criminal justice sophomore Monyai Lett said.

While some students experienced trouble getting to their destinations on time, MSU police reported no difference in the amount of accidents on campus.

But some daring souls not only ventured out on blizzard-like days, they rode their bikes.

"Driving down Harrison, I saw a guy riding his bike, and he was half-covered in snow. He probably tipped over," said Daniel Rodbard, an interdisciplinary studies in social science junior.

While most of the storm is over, the forecast for today shows a chance of snow showers, though nowhere near the amount on Wednesday. But the cold temperatures will be here to stay for the next couple days, so students should continue to bundle up, Beachler said.
