Robbery suspect caught

Police: Students harassed, robbed

January 15, 2004

A man unaffiliated with MSU attempted an armed robbery against two Emmons Hall residents Tuesday night.

Lansing resident Deandre Deshone Hudson, 18, spent Tuesday evening harassing students throughout the building, looking for drugs and money, police said. Officers eventually arrested him with the help of Emmons Hall staff members.

He was arraigned on Wednesday in 54-B District Court. The department is seeking warrants for assault with intent to rob while armed, carrying a concealed weapon and larceny from a building. All the charges are considered felonies.

MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said Hudson "had been in and out of the building asking for weed and money" between 5:30 and 9:45 p.m.

While one student briefly stepped out of his room, Hudson entered through an open door and asked the student's roommate for marijuana, and then to use the phone. Police believe at that time the student's wallet was stolen off his desk.

Later the wallet was located on the second floor by an unknown person who turned it in at the front desk. The student reported $20 missing.

In another incident, Hudson stopped a student outside Emmons Hall, but walked away after the student declined to give money or buy marijuana.

But as Hudson was leaving, McGlothian-Taylor said the student kept an eye on him, at which point Hudson walked back and told the student not to watch him. Hudson again asked for money and revealed a folding knife, then walked away.

By coincidence Hudson later knocked on that same student's door, McGlothian-Taylor said. When he realized it was the same student, he told him not to call police, and left.

Eventually staff members from Emmons Hall were able to tell police what direction Hudson was heading on his bike after a student reported Hudson's suspicious activity. Officers caught Hudson "very quickly" and arrested him, McGlothian-Taylor said.

"That's why it's important when students see something suspicious in the dorm
