Izzo, Cotton discuss transfer possibility

January 7, 2004

Brandon Cotton's future on the MSU men's basketball team could be determined today. The highly touted freshman point guard will meet with head coach Tom Izzo to discuss his possible transfer, according to MSU assistant sports information director Matt Larson.

Izzo announced the possibility of Cotton's transfer at his weekly press conference Monday. He said three schools were in the running for Cotton's destination, one of the three in the Midwest and one in the East.

Cotton, who was named a McDonald's All-American after his senior season at Detroit DePorres, sustained a stress fracture in his foot early in the season. He has struggled to break into the Spartans' regular rotation and has yet to see consistent playing time since recovering from the injury.

Cotton has played in only three of the team's 11 games and is averaging 1.0 points and 5.3 minutes per game. He last saw action during the team's 78-72 win against Coppin State on December 30.

Due to a death in the family, Cotton did not travel with the team to play Syracuse last Saturday. MSU lost to the Orangemen i96-83.
